HR Best Practice:
When filling out performance documentation (write- up) for an employee, always include the following phrases along with a description of the issue in the Employer Statement Section:
Immediate & Sustained improvement is needed.
Any future violations will result in further disciplinary actions, up to and including termination of employment.
This will put the employee on notice (in writing) that performance should immediately improve & stay improved, and what can happen if it doesn’t.
Safety:
Fire Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility
Fire safety is an extremely important part of any workplace safety program. It is
everyone’s responsibility to help prevent fires.
Fire Safety Tips:
• Practice good worksite housekeeping habits. Do not let trash and waste material
accumulate. Oily rags must be stored and disposed of in covered metal containers
• Do not store materials or allow clutter to accumulate around exits and stairways.
• Do not allow machinery or equipment to become overheated. Follow operating
guidelines to prevent overloading
• Electrical equipment should be checked regularly for signs of trouble such as
damaged cords or worn insulation
• Understand the fire hazards of all of the materials chemicals around you as they
may be combustible, flammable, explosive or reactive. Know where to locate the
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for further information
• Where is the fire alarm located?
• Where are the fire extinguishers located? Make sure that you know how to use
them and on what kinds of fires
Everyone has a responsibility for fighting fires. It is up to you to report any unsafe
situations, and to make sure that it is corrected by a qualified and authorized person.
Using the PASS method to fight a fire:
When using a typical fire extinguisher, follow the PASS method. Hold the extinguisher upright and:
Pull the pin (some extinguishers have a cartridge you need to Push), stand back eight or ten feet
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent
Sweep at the base of the fire with the extinguishing agent. If you aim high at the flames, you won’t put out the fire
Today in History:
Although April Fools’ Day, also called All Fools’ Day, has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery. Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. These pranks included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. Historians have also linked April Fools’ Day to festivals such as Hilaria, which was celebrated in ancient Rome at the end of March and involved people dressing up in disguises. There’s also speculation that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather.
Culinary: April 1st is National Sourdough Bread Day!
This tangy, soft sandwich loaf recipe was originally developed for the bread machine; we’ve tweaked it here for those of you without a machine.
AT A GLANCE
- PREP: 10 mins. to 25 mins.
- BAKE: 40 mins. to 50 mins.
- TOTAL: 2 hrs 35 mins. to 3 hrs 45 mins.
- YIELD: one 9″ loaf
- 1 1/2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 1/2 cups Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
- 2 cups ripe (fed) sourdough starter
- 1/2 cup lukewarm water
INSTRUCTIONS
- Combine all the ingredients and mix and knead — by hand, mixer, or bread machine — to make a soft, smooth dough; about 15 to 20 minutes by hand, 7 to 10 minutes in a mixer, and 20 to 30 minutes in a bread machine.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and let it rise for 45 to 60 minutes, until puffy but not necessarily doubled in bulk.
- Lightly grease a 9″ x 5″ loaf pan.
- On a lightly greased work surface, gently deflate the dough, and form it into a 9″ log. Place the log in the prepared pan, cover, and let it rise for 60 to 90 minutes, until it crests about 1″ over the rim of the pan.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Bake the bread for 40 to 50 minutes, until it’s light gold and a digital thermometer inserted into the center reads 190°F.
- Remove the bread from the oven, and after a couple of minutes turn it out of the pan onto a rack to cool. Store, well-wrapped, at room temperature for several days; freeze for longer storage.
Have a great week!
