HR Best Practice:

Providing security to employees

The first Human Resource best practice is employment security. Life is unpredictable and work is a stable factor that is very important to most people. Having an employer who enables the employee to provide for themselves and their family is, in essence, the number one reason why people come to work.

There is both a formal contract (labor for money) and an informal contract (you put in some extra effort, we take good care for you) between the employee and the employer. Employment security enables employees to go home after work and provide for themselves and their families. This concept of security is essential and underpins almost everything HR does.

When this employment security is threatened, for example when there is a restructuring or a layoff, you see this immediately ripple through the organization.

Employment security also benefits organizations because it helps them retain their people. When employees are laid off, for example, it’s usually the organization that pays the price. They are the ones who have invested in the selection, training, and development of these employees. This is a costly process. If the organization doesn’t work on retaining its people, they are more likely to leave and work for the competition.

Safety:

Distracted Driving  

 Distracted driving is the act of driving while engaged in other activities—such  as looking after children, texting, talking on the phone or to a passenger, eating or any activity that take the driver’s attention away from the road. All

distractions compromise the safety of the driver, passengers, bystanders and those in other vehicles.

The popularity of mobile devices has had some unintended and even dangerous consequences. We now know that mobile communications are linked to a significant increase in distracted driving, resulting in injury and loss of life.

The Department of Transportation stated, “text messaging while driving creates a crash risk 23 times higher than driving while not distracted. Despite these statistics, more than 50% of drivers have admitted to sending or receiving text messages at least once every time they drive…”

Pumpkin Roll – Recipe supplied by Mylee Giacone, Office Supervisor, Louisville Slugger Field

 INGREDIENTS

CAKE:

• 1/4 cup powdered sugar (to sprinkle on towel)
• 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 3 large eggs
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 2/3 cup Pure Pumpkin
• 1 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

FILLING:

• 1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, at room temperature
• 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
• 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• Powdered sugar (optional for decoration)

BAKE for 13 to 15 minutes or until top of cake springs back when touched. (If using a dark-colored pan, begin checking for doneness at 11 minutes.) Immediately loosen and turn cake onto prepared towel. Carefully peel off paper. Roll up cake and towel together, starting with narrow end. Cool on wire rack.

FOR FILLING: Blend cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, butter and vanilla extract in small mixer bowl until smooth. Carefully unroll cake. Spread cream cheese mixture over cake. Reroll cake. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least one hour. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

COOKING TIP:
Be sure to put enough powdered sugar on the towel when rolling up the cake so it will not stick.
