HR Best Practice: Selective hiring: Hiring the right people

Bringing in the right people is, therefore, a key to building a competitive advantage.

In today’s digital world, there are a lot of different recruitment tools we can use to make the right selection. More and more companies vigorously keep track of their recruitment metrics to see how well they are doing in this regard.

These (pre-employment) assessments are used to uncover three key candidate characteristics.

  1. Ability: is the person able to do the job? Does the person have the right technical and soft skills? Is the person smart enough to do the job well?
  2. Trainability: can we train this person to improve his/her skills? Has the person the aptitude to learn and keep developing?
  3. Commitment: will the person commit to his/her work and to the organization? Will we be able to retain this person once he/she is up to speed and fully productive?

Safety: Workplace Summer Safety Tips

Working in the summer can be dangerous if you do not know how to properly protect yourself from the heat and sun. Many people do not realize the effect that the summer weather can have on your health and wellbeing. Below are some workplace summer safety tips that can help you beat the heat and stay healthy all summer long:

  1. Always dress appropriately. Our jobs require long pants and many times long sleeves.
  2. If working outdoors, wear protective sunscreen with an appropriate SPF rating.
  3. Keep clothing light colors. The darker the fabric the more sun it will absorb.
  4. Wear clothes that breathe and nothing that is too tight.
  5. Drink plenty of fluids.
  6. Take breaks and go indoors whenever possible. It is important to allow your body a chance to recover from the heat.
  7. If you feel dizzy, weak or nauseous, take a break immediately.
  8. Sunglasses and hats will help keep your body slightly cooler than it would be without them.

These are just a few workplace summer safety tips that will help you to make it through the hot summer months. Safety is important all year long and you should always be doing your best to work as safely and efficiently as possible.

National Rescue Dog Day, May 20

On May 20, National Rescue Dog Day recognizes all the benefits of allowing a four-legged canine to adopt you into their immeasurably lovable life. According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year.

 HOW TO OBSERVE

  • Get involved in the lives of rescue dogs. There are a variety of ways to share the puppy love.
  • Volunteer at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks, grooming and giving them plenty of affection improves their socialization.
  • Shelters always need donations. Financial donations are always welcome. Most shelters have a list of constant needs, such as blankets, bleach, toys, treats, and leashes.
  • If there is room in your life for a rescue dog, consider adoption and giving one a forever home.
  • Consider fostering. Many dogs abandoned to shelters require some medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place.
  • Remember to spay and neuter your pets. Overpopulation is the number one reason shelters exist.
