PUZZLES FOR THE WEEK OF 4/25:

(1) Rising Tide

The rope ladder of a boat hangs over the side of the boat and just reaches the water. Its rungs are 8 inches apart.  How many rungs will be under the water when the tide rises 4 feet?

(2) Time to Tell

A sundial is said to be the timepiece with the fewest moving parts. What is the timepiece with the most moving parts?

(3) Famous Words

All the vowels have been removed from the opening words of a famous American document. So have the breaks between words. All that are left are the following consonants. What are the words?          FRSCRNDSVNYRSG

(4) Unscramble

You’ve done word scrambles before, but for some reason people find this one particularly difficult. Can you work with the following letters to spell a 10-letter English word?          TTNENUMROA

(5) Fill in the Missing Square

Can you fill in the missing square with the number that logically belongs there?

MM Table

ANSWERS FROM LAST WEEK:

  1. Burning Ropes

Light both ends of rope A and one end of rope B. After 30 minutes, rope A will be completely burned up and there will be 30 minutes of rope B left. Light the other end of rope B; it will burn up in 15 minutes. Total time elapsed since starting the ropes on fire: 45 minutes.

  1. Cork, Bottle, Coin

Push the cork into the bottle and shake the coin out.

  1. Manhole

You can turn a square manhole cover sideways and drop it down the diagonal of the manhole. You cannot drop a round manhole cover down the manhole. Therefore, round manhole covers are safer and more practical than square ones.
