Managers should hand this out to staff and review as the employees follow along. Afterwards give the employees the test to complete.
Information on the data sheet will be broken into 16 sections.

Section 1: Identification

  • The name of the product should be the same on the bottle as on the sheet. Never place a chemical in a container that previously held another chemical, or has a different label. 
  • This should also have the contact information of the manufacturer of the chemical.

Section 2: Hazard Identification

  • Look out for the words Warning and Danger.
    • Warning – you need to be cautious.
    • Danger – you need to handle with extreme caution

Section 4: First Aid Measures

  • What to do?
  • Symptoms, effects
  • Treatment

Section 5: Fire Fighting Measures

  • Different chemicals require different approached to putting out the fire (water does not help with a grease fire, but baking soda does)
  • What to use on the fire
  • Dangers of the fire and/or smoke

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

  • Lists emergency procedures & cleanup
  • (How to handle spills)

Section 7: Handling and Storage

  • Certain chemicals can react to heat, light, or other chemicals, How & Where to store them safely.
  • Storage Precautions, etc.

Section 8: Exposure levels/Personal Protection

  • Do you need safety equipment to handle the chemical
  • What is needed to use the chemical?
  • Lists any exposure limits

Section 9: Physical and Chemical Properties

  • What does the chemical look, smell, and feel like, etc.

Section 10: Stability and Reactivity

  • List of things to be avoided that may make the chemical dangerous.

Section 11: Toxicological Information

  • Is it poisonous?
  • What are dangers to your health (short term & long term)
  • How it could get into your body
  • Symptoms of exposure

Section 12: Ecological impact

  • How this affects the environment

Section 13: Disposal Considerations

  • How to get rid of the chemical

Section 14: Transport Information

  • How to safely move the chemical

Section 15: Regulatory Information

  • Any extra rules about the chemical

Section 16: Other information
